Sterile Processing Technician - Scopes (3PM to 11PM)

Summary: Performs reprocessing activities to include cleaning and reprocessing a variety of endoscopes and accessories as well as ultrasound probes and all other items that require high level disinfection. Maintains and stocks instruments and supplies. Identifies and labels instruments to be delivered for processing as indicated. Receives and distributes instruments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, assembles, sterilizes, and transports equipment, supplies and instruments according to prescribed procedures and techniques.

  • Monitors reprocessing units to ensure they are performing at optimal levels. Performs routine checks on reprocessing equipment and high level disinfecting agents. Interprets and records results. Reports problems to Manager.

  • Maintains Endoscopy equipment following standard procedures.

  • Operates reprocessing equipment utilizing proper operating procedures and methods in accordance with manufacturers recommended parameters for use as well as loading and unloading techniques. Follows procedures and infection control guidelines.

  • Maintains and stocks equipment, instruments and supplies. Puts equipment, instruments and supplies away in neat and orderly fashion, using proper stocking and storage techniques. Requests orders for replacements as required by manager.

  • Oversees the care, handling, and maintenance of endoscope equipment. Inspects endoscopes and any broken equipment and reports to Manager. Troubleshoots basic technical problems with endoscopes or other equipment. Sends equipment for repairs following departmental procedure.

  • Decontaminates the full range of reusable patient care equipment and medical supplies, including but not limited to surgical instruments, containers and equipment such as aspirators, croupettes, oxygen suppliers and small movable equipment using detergents and disinfecting solutions.

  • Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, high level disinfects, assembles and transports flexible fiberscopes, TEE Probes, Manometer Probes, Bougies, etc.

  • Operates semi-automatic to automatic high level disinfecting and sterilizing equipment; operates mechanical decontamination equipment and other related equipment, e.g., ultra-sonic washers, rinsers/dryers.

  • Prepares packages of supplies and instrument trays, needles, syringes and gloves according to prescribed procedures; wraps, labels and seals.

  • Prepares list of contents and affixes list to package or groups of packages. Uses central system for supplies being processed.

  • Handles exchange carts for stock items and supplies and maintains distribution records.

  • Maintains cleanliness of sterilizers, washers and other department equipment as scheduled.

  • Performs quality and performance testing on all sterilizers, washers and high level disinfecting equipment.

  • Uses tracking software to track all instrumentation and equipment as well as keep all sterilization records accurate.

  • Performs leak test on all flexible endoscopes as well as TEE Probes.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) Certification required.

  • Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) Certification required.

  • Associates Degree in related Healthcare field preferred. College level courses/related experience may substitute.

  • Ability to push, pull, and lift greater than 50 pounds.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
